In 2025, the Borodin Quartet, one of the most legendary ensembles in the history of chamber music, celebrates its 80th anniversary. This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the passing of the great composer Dmitri Shostakovich.
Renowned for their profound insight and unparalleled authority in interpretation, the Borodin Quartet has set the benchmark in chamber music performance. Over decades of collaboration with Shostakovich, the ensemble developed a unique and intimate connection with his works. The composer personally guided the members in rehearsals of each quartet, and as a result, the Borodin Quartet’s performances are widely recognized as the most authoritative and faithful interpretations of Shostakovich’s music.
Founded in Moscow in 1945, the Borodin Quartet has been called “Russian masters” by The Daily Telegraph (Australia). The ensemble maintains deep ties with Russian repertoire, continuously performing and recording string quartets by Borodin, Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, Glinka, Schnittke, and other composers.
Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung commented: “What we witness here is not four individual musicians, but a single, exquisitely crafted sixteen-stringed instrument performing with extraordinary virtuosity.”
This winter, in December, the Borodin Quartet will return to China, carrying eighty years of legacy, and celebrate Shostakovich through music that honors and commemorates his genius.
